The Rose Harvest Festival in Isparta – A Celebration of Flowers and Tradition

Every year from mid-May until the end of June, the peaceful city of Isparta in southwest Turkey transforms into a sea of pink roses and is filled with the fresh scent of blooming flowers. This is the time for the Rose Harvest Festival. Often called the City of Roses, Isparta is famous for cultivating the Damask rose, a flower prized for its use in perfumes, cosmetics, and natural rose oil.

When and Where Does It Happen?

The rose blooming season runs from mid-May through late June, with the main festivities typically held between the end of May and early June. The best places to experience the festival are the nearby villages of Guneykent, Gulkoy, and Yesilyurt. These areas boast large rose fields and are easily accessible by car or local tours. Guneykent, known as the Valley of Roses, is especially renowned for its extensive rose rows and traditional methods of producing rose oil.

What Takes Place During the Festival?

Early Morning Rose Picking
Rose harvesting begins very early, around 5 AM, when the petals are at their freshest and richest in oil. Local farmers head out with baskets to gather the flowers, and visitors are welcome to join and learn how to carefully pick the delicate petals by hand. The experience is peaceful and quiet, with a soft, sweet fragrance that many describe as one of the festival’s highlights.

Rose Oil Distillation Workshops
After harvesting, the rose petals are brought to small local distilleries where rose oil is extracted using a steam distillation process. This traditional method is slow and precise—around four tons of petals are needed to produce just one kilogram of pure rose oil. Visitors can often observe the full distillation process, and some even get a chance to participate in a hands-on, smaller-scale version guided by locals.

Cultural Events and Traditions
The festival is about more than just roses. It features folk music performances, traditional dances, and craft markets. Women dressed in traditional attire sell homemade food, handicrafts, and rose-based products, sharing a warm welcome and a glimpse into local culture.
